Party Like It’s 1923 : Gatsby Costume Party

I certainly never need an excuse to bust out my fancy clothes and mix up a batch of French 75’s, but a Roaring 20’s party certainly gives me permission. Even though this wasn’t an official Halloween party, it was the perfect time to don costumes and bring ourselves back a few decades. Every guest in attendance actually dressed up, which I’m pretty sure was a first for me! There’s just something about putting on a suit that gets even the most laid-back guy a little bit excited (yep, I’m looking at you, Jim!).

I’ve worn this dress alone before for a Gatsby-themed party, but this time I decided to go all in and craft my own flapper headband. Don’t give me too much credit, though- I simply found two dangly pearl earrings, threaded them through a sparkly headband, and topped it all with the fascinator I wore for our 2010 wedding. It didn’t take much, but the end result made me feel quite festive! If you’re in a pinch for a Halloween costume tonight (not that such things EVER happens!), I highly recommend it.

I’ve mentioned the delicious magic of French 75’s before, but I will warn you that they’re definitely a double-edged sword. They’re so light and tasty that you can’t help but forget that they’re pretty darn potent. Seriously- we emptied the entire contents of a Costco bottle of Bombay Sapphire into that punch bowl. I mention that solely to excuse the declining quality of photography over the course over the evening 😉

Much love to our friends who made the night so festive and special! Especially with the holidays coming up, I have a feeling that we’ll be hosting many more of these events soon. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Five Quick Snaps

San Francisco bay, Aquatic Park beach, Aquatic Park SF

It’s been a while since I posted my last five quick snaps, and I was realizing that I’ve just had so many things to write about that I stopped taking time to bring together fun little details. As much as I love outfit posts and telling you about cool places I went, I think it’s those little details you could easily miss that make life so interesting.

And speaking of little details, yes, that is me in the water sans wetsuit. No, it’s no photoshopped, and yes, that is indeed the San Francisco Bay. We had a rare 80-degree day last weekend, and I had to seize the day. It was fantastic, and my toes only turned slightly blue.

Ok, I know I’ve said it around 50 times, but I was damn proud of my nautical-themed pashmina afghan that I wore to America’s Cup. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, google “Lonely Island On a Boat” and be sure to watch the censored version if you prefer not to have your speakers explode with profanity. Anyway, it was a simply gorgeous day, and it was so inspiring to see a community come together to watch the races. More on that soon!

Have you ever had a real beignet before? Seriously- have you? Because I thought I was living life to the fullest, but then I stepped into Bottega Louie in downtown Los Angeles, and everything changed. I devoured the beignet too quickly to photograph it (seriously, it was embarrassing), but the macaroon tower bravely survived Hurricane Sarah.

I mentioned before that a new bar called Palmer’s just moved in to our neighborhood, and I’ve officially fallen in love with it. From the plush red leather stools to its magician-like bartenders, it’s proof that value really does lie in the details. Even their liquor display is a warm, well-lit work of art. Time for a sazerac!

Even though I’ve been wearing a hell of a lot of black & white lately, my first love will always be color. I had the opportunity to attend an event at Mercy Vintage Now in Oakland, a fantastically-curated establishment that showcases beautiful vintage clothes. For their Stage:Play event last Friday, I had the opportunity to preview 90’s-era designer pieces actually worn by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. I had my eye on a particularly fantastic Marc Jacobs dress covered in shimmering metallic discs, but my attempts to will the dress to grow two sizes larger were unsuccessful. Here it is in the bonus snap below:

Happy Tuesday, friends! I so appreciate you stopping by, and I hope you’ll stick around this week for fun outfit photos and my wearable guide to the trends we’re seeing right now at New York Fashion Week.

Holiday From Real

Vintage blouse, Madewell trousers, Sam Edelman flats, Forever 21 necklace

Sometimes, I have to take a moment to look around and ask myself, “Is this really real? Is this my life?” Most of my days involve nothing more exciting than fluorescent lighting and a computer screen, but some moments within feel like something straight out of a fantastic novel I read years ago.

My friends J.M. and M.B. recently moved into a one-of-a-kind apartment, a mysteriously charming space with endless dark-wood halls and carefully curated collections of vintage glass and beautiful books. It’s the kind of place where a phonograph seems more appropriate than a television, and all the drinks are made with bitters. It feels like a little world outside my own, as if I stepped through C.S. Lewis’s famous wardrobe into a land that’s just a little more beautiful than the one I inhabit.

In times like this, the only thing to do is borrow your friend’s vintage silk blouse, pour your beer into a mason jar, and grab a camera.
