So, here we are. Here’s the part where I say something about how fast this year has gone by, and how many things have happened, and how incredible it’s been to hear feedback from people who have been reading my blog. But I don’t think there’s a way I can adequately express my thanks and tell you how much it means to me that you’re here. And I fancy myself a writer, so that’s just embarrassing.

This year has seen so much- an utter career shift, exciting adventures, personal challenges, and so much growth and discovery. You’ve traveled with me twice to Los Angeles, first for BeautyCon and then again for the whirlwind of LA Fashion Week. You’ve hung out with me on rooftops, you’ve checked out art exhibit openings, and you’ve had more than your fair share of wine in Napa (and another glass, and another glass, and another). One Gatsby party is never enough, so you came on over for my own version. You’ve also gotten to know my family, seen me without makeup, and peek into what life is like when I put fashion on pause.

2013 has certainly been a trip. It’s been the most tumultuous year that I can remember, but all that change felt so necessary. Now it’s time to work out the kinks. I’m not sure what 2014 will bring, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one.

So, again, thank you. Thank you for reading and for being here. Tonight, I’ll be raising a glass to you. Happy New Year!

Dinner for Nine

At the Sanfranista household, a fancy dinner at home involves throwing a bunch of veggies into a pot of soup and picking up some crusty bread from the bakery down the street. For others, however, it involves custom place settings, foie gras, and cocktails that would cost you $15+ at a specialty bar.

Two of our good friends hosted such a party earlier this summer, and they went all in! For those of you who live in San Francisco (or anywhere else with shoebox-sized apartments), you understand the challenge of hosting dinner for four, let alone almost ten guests. Our friends were graciously and creatively up for the challenge, hosting the cocktail hour in their kitchen/living room area before ushering us to a beautifully set table for the meal. I felt like such a grown-up!

As you saw in my Napa post in March, these ladies know how to dress. They’re always nudging me to wear more color, and I’m such a fan of the little ways they incorporated it via details like baby blue polish or emerald-colored earrings. The evening was delicious, gorgeous, and full of entertaining inspiration. Who knows, I might just have to throw a dinner party in our studio one of these days…

If you decide to host your own dinner party (or just feel like busting out the bubbly), here’s how to make the delicious French 75 cocktails we had. Grab a lemon and carefully slice a pretty, long peel in a spiral shape. Combine 3 tbsp gin, 1.5 tbsp lemon juice, and 1 tbsp simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake it like a Polaroid picture. Strain into a champagne flute or other fashionably skinny glass and top with sparkling wine. Add your pretty little twist and enjoy!

You Remind Me of the Babe

From the second I saw these boots peeking out at me, I couldn’t get the image of David Bowie out of my head. Even though his career spans multiple decades (rock on, dude), I’ll always think of him as Jareth, the glitter-fabulous Goblin King in Labyrinth. If you were friends with me in middle school or high school, you were almost certainly forced to watch it at one of my birthday parties. And every sleepover I hosted. Ever.

If you’re not familiar with the movie or DB’s character, think lots of spandex, capes, 80’s hair, and more glitter than an 8th grade dance. His costumes were part glam rock, part early 80’s punk, and completely ridiculous. In my twelve-year-old mind, Jareth was the perfect combination of toughness and style, of masculinity and oddly feminine makeup, and I was torn between wanting to be like him and wanting to marry him. Explains quite a few of my fashion choices, right?

As tempting as it would be to channel Jareth with a full-on ruffled tuxedo shirt and a blue velvet jacket, I decided to aim the focus on the Bowie boots by keeping the rest of my outfit tailored, dark, and simple. I liked how the warm brass tone of the zipper on the sweater play off the necklaces I layered, and I have a feeling this outfit is going to become a new staple. It’s comfy and cozy but still makes me feel a little badass.

Now go watch Labyrinth. You’ll thank me later.
