Sweater Weather

Sweater: Xhiliration (circa 2009), Shorts: Rag & Bone, Booties: Sam Edelman, Bracelet: Stella & Dot

I really have been all about the shorts-and-leggings thing lately, haven’t I? I just can’t get enough of how comfy it is- it feels like I’m wearing pajamas! It also doesn’t hurt that the combo is pretty forgiving to the consequences of a very indulgent birthday month. My jeans and I are having a bit of a disagreement these days, but I maintain that all that pumpkin beer was worth it. Besides, it’s sweater weather now- the chunkier and thicker, the better!

My mom gave me this sweater several years ago, and I loved it but couldn’t find the right way to wear it until recently. It’s so thick and cozy, and I wanted to balance out its heft with something sleeker on the bottom. I’ve also worn it with a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans and tall boots to achieve a similar effect (there’s your option, shorts haters!). I also love how the chunky bracelet echoes the texture in the sweater but adds just the right amount of sparkle to the casual outfit.

And speaking of sweater weather, I’m so incredibly excited to head to the midwest this Sunday! I’ll be spending the first half of the week with my family in Minnesota before heading to Chicago to meet up with Jim’s family. This is going to be the extent of our home visits for the holiday season, and it’s strange to think about celebrating the holidays without our families and a hefty dose of snow. It’s times like these that make me wish for a private plane, or at least a way to bring the midwest a little bit closer.

Even though it’s an adjustment to stay in San Francisco for the holidays, it’s also so exciting to get to start our own traditions. I’ve already started my San Fran Christmas bucket list, but I promised myself I wouldn’t share it until after Thanksgiving! But I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to hear yours- are you thinking about the holidays yet?

Greyscale + Leather Shorts

leather shorts and sweater, leather shorts for fall, leggings and leather shorts, space-dye sweater, Frye Lucy boots

Sweater: Forever 21, Shorts: French Connection, Boots: Frye, Jewelry: Stella & Dot, Marc by Marc Jacobs

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a year since I first attempted the shorts-and-tights look. I used to seriously judge the look, which I considered to be afashion faux pas. But once I hopped down off my high horse, I discovered that shorts and tights are a match made in heaven. You can flaunt your legs while covering your rear and battling the winter cold, all in one fell swoop!

I’ve been wearing the hell out of these French Connection shorts ever since I saw them peeking at me from a magical sale rack (they’re still on sale!). I longed for leather-look shorts with a faux leather price tag, and this pair is just the ticket. I love how they add just a little bit of edge to a slouchy sweater ensemble, and they loose leg opening keeps them modern and polished.

And yes, it’s officially the time of year for these lace-up boots to shine. Despite Jim’s insistence that they look like construction boots, I can’t get enough of the chunky-comfy heel and the badassery that I feel every time I put them on. They’re just a light enough tan that they work when mixing leathers, which previously freaked me out.

Finally, much love to my friend Kathryn for lending me all this fantastic jewelry! I borrowed loads from her to adorn myself during LA Fashion Week, and I figured I’d get one last hurrah out of the fabulousness before I return them to her. It’s not goodbye forever, though- after all, Christmas is coming up 😉

Five Quick Snaps

Lake Tahoe, Tahoe, fall in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe, Tahoe, fall in Lake Tahoe

You can take the girl out of the midwest, but you can’t take the midwest out of the girl. Every time October rolls around, I start to get a little restless while I try to will the trees outside our apartment to turn yellow, even just a little. I now accept that San Francisco doesn’t “do” fall, but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped craving it.

Even though Lake Tahoe clearly isn’t in the midwest (unless you think California should be its own country), the fallen leaves and crisp scent of the air brought me straight back to the woods outside my parents’ house. We were lucky enough to spend last weekend there with friends, whiling away the hours with walks around the lake and childhood board games. There were boozy hot drinks, decadent brunch dishes, and an almost constant fire roaring in the fireplace.

Upon leaving, I realized that I felt as calm and refreshed as if I’d just completed a 90-minute yoga class and chugged the greenest smoothie in the world. I have a hard time picturing life outside the Bay Area for Jim and me, but I now realize how important it is for me to get back to my quiet, clear, country roots.

But for those days when I put my City Girl hat back on, there’s always Boot and Shoe Service in Oakland. You’ve never really experienced a croissant until you’ve eaten one here. I mean, they’ll bring you a whole giant platter for $10 as an appetizer while you wait for your food. It’s dangerous, I tell you.

Aaaaand it wouldn’t be a cozy fall day without a kitty in it. No, we haven’t taken the plunge to add a third member to our family, but we certainly soak up all the time we can with my cousin’s two gorgeous creatures. I now crave a living pillow when I go to sleep.
