Five Quick Snaps

San Francisco bay, Aquatic Park beach, Aquatic Park SF

It’s been a while since I posted my last five quick snaps, and I was realizing that I’ve just had so many things to write about that I stopped taking time to bring together fun little details. As much as I love outfit posts and telling you about cool places I went, I think it’s those little details you could easily miss that make life so interesting.

And speaking of little details, yes, that is me in the water sans wetsuit. No, it’s no photoshopped, and yes, that is indeed the San Francisco Bay. We had a rare 80-degree day last weekend, and I had to seize the day. It was fantastic, and my toes only turned slightly blue.

anchor scarf, nautical scarf, nautical print scarf, america's cup san francisco

Ok, I know I’ve said it around 50 times, but I was damn proud of my nautical-themed pashmina afghan that I wore to America’s Cup. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, google “Lonely Island On a Boat” and be sure to watch the censored version if you prefer not to have your speakers explode with profanity. Anyway, it was a simply gorgeous day, and it was so inspiring to see a community come together to watch the races. More on that soon!

macaroon tower, french maracroon, los angeles bakery, bottege louie los angeles, bottega louie la

Have you ever had a real beignet before? Seriously- have you? Because I thought I was living life to the fullest, but then I stepped into Bottega Louie in downtown Los Angeles, and everything changed. I devoured the beignet too quickly to photograph it (seriously, it was embarrassing), but the macaroon tower bravely survived Hurricane Sarah.

palmer's tavern, palmer's cocktails, palmer's sf, palmer's san francisco, cocktails in pacific heights

I mentioned before that a new bar called Palmer’s just moved in to our neighborhood, and I’ve officially fallen in love with it. From the plush red leather stools to its magician-like bartenders, it’s proof that value really does lie in the details. Even their liquor display is a warm, well-lit work of art. Time for a sazerac!

Even though I’ve been wearing a hell of a lot of black & white lately, my first love will always be color. I had the opportunity to attend an event at Mercy Vintage Now in Oakland, a fantastically-curated establishment that showcases beautiful vintage clothes. For their Stage:Play event last Friday, I had the opportunity to preview 90’s-era designer pieces actually worn by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. I had my eye on a particularly fantastic Marc Jacobs dress covered in shimmering metallic discs, but my attempts to will the dress to grow two sizes larger were unsuccessful. Here it is in the bonus snap below:

Happy Tuesday, friends! I so appreciate you stopping by, and I hope you’ll stick around this week for fun outfit photos and my wearable guide to the trends we’re seeing right now at New York Fashion Week.

The Roof on Wilshire

The Roof on Wilshire, rooftop brunch, rooftop cocktails, Beverly Hills style, polka dot dress, Xhiliration polka dot dress, Target polka dot dress Dress: Xhiliration, Heels: Franco Sarto (circa 2007)

Clearly, there’s more to Beverly Hills than visiting scenes from Pretty Woman. But I couldn’t resist getting brunch one morning atop Hotel Wilshire, even if its connection to the movie is in name only. I heard about this rooftop gem when reading through a “Best of Los Angeles” list, and I can certainly see why it made the cut. From its crisp, modern architecture to its sprawling views of the Hollywood Hills, this is one must-go destination that lived up to its reputation. Even my salad and cappuccino were tiny little works of art.

I already showed you the top half of this dress when I wore it under a maxi skirt for BeautyCon, but I’m finally unveiling it in all its junior-sized glory. Fortunately I like my hemlines pretty darn high, given that I’m pretty sure this dress was fit for someone under 5’4″ (or a really confident 16-year-old). I love the playful flounce of the skirt, and you already know how I feel about polka dots. Add a pan collar, and I’m done for.

I spotted this dress while peeking online at new arrivals at Target, and as soon as I saw this little number, I took my lunch break to run over to the City Target across the street. I had no idea that it was part of a design collaboration between Target and Blair Eadie Atlantic-Pacific until I saw her post on it the following week. What a happy little coincidence! I took a size larger than I normally would due to the juniors sizing, but the soft fabric and great amount of stretch make for a flexible fit.

Even though I wore this during a 90-degree Los Angeles day, I’m already planning to wear it for fall in San Francisco with a pair of bright red tights, my faithful suede booties, and my favorite black denim jacket. We’re in the throes of San Francisco summer over here (it was 85 degrees last weekend!), but I know it’s only a matter of time before the fog rolls back in.

Two Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills outfit, Los Angeles style, leather shorts style, leather shorts, leather shorts outfit
Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills outfit, Los Angeles style, arm party, stacking bracelets, gold chain necklace

Tee: Zara, Shorts: French Connection, Sandals: BCBG (worn here recently), Bag: Modalu (similar), Necklace: Serafina, Bracelets: Brighton, Forever 21

Like any self-respecting young woman raised in the Midwest during the 1990’s, when I think of Beverly Hills, I think of Pretty Woman. Perhaps 90210, but I somehow missed out on that one. Regardless, Beverly Hills holds a certain je nae sais quoi, a certain elusive glamour and elegance that I always wanted to experience. It’s kind of how people are fascinated with celebrities- there’s this idea that if you can get close enough to one or even just dress like one, you might absorb some of their magic.

Even though Julia Roberts and Richard Gere were sadly absent from our Rodeo Drive jaunt, the magic was most definitely there. We strolled, we gawked (ok, I gawked, Jim patiently waited), and we somehow managed to snag a table that allowed us to people-watch amongst the blossoms. Really, it was everything that I’d hoped for and more, considering that I had already prepared myself to refrain from purchasing anything.

We happened to show up just as a Hermes super-secret sale was beginning, and Jim kindly indulged me in exploring it. Entering the room involved going through several back alleys and Jim having to check his camera at the door, so all that I have are memories of running my hand along the lapel of a $8000 jacket (but it’s half off!) and watching wide-eyed as well-dressed women quietly battled over a particularly fantastic pair of boots.

For the occasion, I went for the “oh, I just rolled out bed, even though I secretly tried on 15 different shirts” look. I’ve been hunting for a pair of leather shorts for months, and I finally found the perfect pair by French Connection with just-right length, the cuffs I craved, and a pretty darn convincing faux leather material. I kept the look simple but couldn’t resist piling on a few bracelets to create a happy little jingle while I walked. Why not make your presence known?
