Five Quick Snaps

This week more than ever, love is most certainly in the air. I felt it overtly in the post-SCOTUS ruling celebrations that overtook our beautiful city, and it felt it walking home up Fillmore Street and seeing smiling couples dining al fresco in the summer air. Next thing you know, I’ll start belting out, “I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes…”

It’s definitely been a week for self-reflection. I consider myself to be a fairly happy and grateful person, but I can still fall prey to dwelling on frustrations and negativity. It can be a roller-coaster of emotions inside this head, and I have to remind myself to sit back and sort them out from time to time.

One year ago, my dad underwent a sudden and serious surgery that prompted me to fly home urgently as my mom, brother, and I tried to hold ourselves together in the days and weeks that followed. It was the most distressing time in my life, and I noticed reverberations in my feelings and actions for months. Now that a year’s past and I think about seeing my dad grow strong and healthy again, it’s impossible not to feel grateful.

It’s amazing how those little annoying things fade away when I take a moment to realize how beautiful life can be.

The iconic Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Jim and I took a sudden (and rare!) weekend out of town together down to the beach, and it was exactly what I needed! Sunshine, soft serve, and lots of sea lion sightings.

Yes, that is indeed a glass of rosé on top of a stack of children’s books. Because being a grown-up is awesome.

There’s really nothing that needs to be said… I just really, really love California.

I’ve clearly been having a daisy moment lately- the flower as well as the infamous Fitzgerald character. Something about the warmer weather and singing birds outside my window brings out my femme side, and I’ve been reaching for my polka dots and crochet over my pleather pants and studded jackets. Call me a romantic!

Jim and I decided to stick close to home one beautiful Sunday, getting brunch at a bistro down the street before exploring one of the gorgeous parks nearby. Alta Plaza Park, also known in our household as Puppy Haven, is the perfect place to lie on the grass and fantasize about kidnapping one of the goofy dogs running around chasing each others’ tails. One day, when we don’t live in a studio…

This happy little polka-dot number is my most recent find, and a good friend convinced me to take the plunge. What plunge, you say? Well, the hemline grazes my knees, I’m wearing it without leggings (gasp!), and the silhouette is pretty darn loose-fitting. I know, I’m exaggerating a bit, but it’s a definitely a step in a different direction for me. I could get used to this!

Also, I’m pretty sure this is the second time I’ve worn this bracelet, even though I purchased it back in 2009 to wear for our wedding. I wound up wearing a pearl piece from my mom, and this has been sitting sadly in my closet ever since. But that ends today! Liberate the bracelet! Viva la daisy!

It’s not every Saturday night that I bust out a full-on flapper dress and heels. Then again, it’s not every Saturday night that I attend a Gatsby-themed murder mystery dinner party in the heart of the Haight. My friend and fellow fashion blogger JM Mericle of Thread & Bones had the inspired idea to throw the soiree to end all soirees- 1920’s style. The night was full of laughter, dangerously potent gin punch, and costumes that transported me back to Jay Gatsby’s fabulous parties.

When I entered the apartment-come-speakeasy, I left Sarah Lee behind as I assumed the persona of the fearsome gun moll Billie Baird. The guests slipped in and out of character while they dropped 1920’s slang and listened carefully for clues. My attention-shy husband even agreed to take on the role of mobster Babyface O’Toole, complete with Chicago accent. It’s amazing what a little punch can do!

I fell in love with this Alice + Olivia dress after seeing Ali wearing it on her season of The Bachelorette (don’t judge!). It was one of the first pieces of clothing that truly stunned me, and I knew that I had to have it in my life. Being halfway through grad school, there was no way that I could drop hundreds of dollars on a dress that I’d only wear a few times a year.

But I’m not a girl who gives up easily.

Many hours of searching and a two fierce eBay battles later, I brought my size XL prize to a tailor and had her work her magic. I love wearing it with toned-down accessories for special (post-1920’s) occasions, but it works so well as a flapper costume with the addition of a few glitzy accessories. Fun fact: I wore the pearl bracelet on our wedding day!

It was certainly a night to remember, old sport.
