The New York Diaries : The Inspiration

all-black outfit, winter fashion, fashion week style, NYFW inspiration, New York Fashion Week

I seriously cannot believe that New York Fashion Week starts two weeks from tomorrow. I’ve been dreaming of attending for years, and now it’s finally going to be real. True, I’ll likely spend most of my time huddling in my stilettos outside the tents, but just being present for the event gives me butterflies in my stomach. Maybe even a sparrow.

A few of my friends have been asking me what I’m going to be wearing. After all, I’ve been lulled into a false impression of winter, given that it’s currently 65 degrees and sunny in San Francisco. But I’m excited to get back in touch with my Minnesota roots and find a way to look somewhat fashionable even when obscured by a giant coat.

I wrote recently about my all-black uniform, and I’m using my no-color palette as a building block for what I’ll be wearing that week. There’s so much fantastic inspiration out there, and a few looks in particular are getting me excited to start styling. I’m going to try my hardest to be selective about what I pack, only bringing the minimum (not my whole closet) for a week of mixing and matching.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Brick House

layered plaid shirt, plaid shirt under dress, layer style, Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC, Maison Scotch shirt, Rag & Bone Newbury boots

Shirt: Maison Scotch. Dress: Xhiliration (again here). Boots: Rag & Bone. Bag: Rebecca Minkoff. Jewelry: Marc by Marc Jacobs. Lips: bareMinerals Moxie in Amped.

What’s that, you say? You now have a fabulous song stuck in your head and are never going to forgive me? Well, I do apologize (but clearly not enough, since I’m keeping this post title as is).

If you’re ever in San Francisco, I highly recommend walking up and down Jackson and Pacific in Pacific Heights. So many different parts of San Francisco call to me, but there’s just something about that stretch that makes me so happy. The houses are gorgeous, like this brick baby in our photos, and the view of the bay from Jackson and Broadway is a sight to behold. Whenever I’m getting caught up in something silly, all it takes is that view to bring me back to center.

I’ve worn this checked shirt six ways from Sunday (don’t believe me? go here and here), but I had yet to layer it under a dress. Now I think I’m hooked. I hate wearing jackets over dresses with lovely details, which is why most of my clothing is 3/4-sleeved. Layering a punchy shirt under is simply the perfect solution. Why didn’t I think of this before? That’s right- I used to associate layers button-downs with the preppy horror that was 90’s teen movies. Time for a new direction.

All Puffed Up

puffer vest, puffy vest style, polka dot vest, vest with layers

Vest: Gap (sold out, similar here). Sweater: Forever 21 (see it again here). Pants: Levis (similar). Boots: Vince Camuto. Lips: bareMinerals in “Amped”

I honestly can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve already. As I had a feeling it would, this month has passed in an absolute blur of holiday celebrations. I checked off almost everything on my list! I have a bit of a reputation for going overboard with the holiday cheer, and this year was certainly no exception. Even after most of my shopping and crafting was done, I couldn’t resist heading down the hill to explore Sephora. I’m used to walking the aisles to find little things for myself, but it was such a fun experience going in gifting mode. So what if I picked up a new shade of nail polish along the way? Collateral damage, my friends.

Even though most of my friends are taking advantage of the season to bust out their brightest reds and sparkliest golds, for some reason I’m still in black-and-grey mode. It’s just such an easy palette to mix and match, and I love the drama of pairing super-bright lips with a monochromatic outfit. But hey- at least I’m mixing some patterns, right? There is paisley happening up in here!

This vest marks #7 in my puffer vest collection. I blame my vest obsession on my dad, who is rarely seen without his series of red vests. Seriously- when he was interviewed on national TV for his business, he was wearing a puffy vest. Gotta love it. My version fits a little closer to the body, and the polka dots add a splash of playfulness. Go grey or go bright- you’ve got to have a vest this time of year.
